This popular program offers a Eucharist/Healing service followed by a program of live music to Nursing Homes in the Piedmont Virginia area. The Nursing Homes Swing was created in 2008 by parishioners Bob and Jackie Hostage who wanted to find ways to reach out to residents of local nursing homes and brighten the lives of people.
The Hostages typically schedule one or two events each week, rotating between several area residences. Everyone involved seems to benefit: the residents, the musicians, and the Episcopal priests who volunteer to preside at the worship services. Bob says their program continues to be successful beyond all original expectations, as they visit Mountainside Assisted Living in Crozet, The Cedars, The Laurels, Heritage Hall,
Nursing Homes Swing program truly appreciates all of the musicians and is grateful for the people who offer their time without compensation. They have about a 50/50 mix of paid and pro bono acts. Jazz and swing are the favorites of the audience; the terrific performers include the CHS Ensemble, Covenant School Choir; and a Gospel music quartet from a local Baptist church. The programs have included trombone, saxophone, clarinet, French horn, and flute ensembles, courtesy of the Charlottesville Municipal Band.
